Syllabus of CBSE Class 9 Maths – 1.Number System

Term I

  • REAL NUMBERS
    • Rationalization (with precise meaning) of real numbers of the type 1/(a+b√x) & 1/(√x+√y) (and their combinations) where x & y are a natural number and a and b are integers.
    • Recall of the laws of exponents with integral powers. Rational exponents with positive real bases (to be done by particular cases, allowing the learner to arrive at the general laws.)
    • Definition of nth root of the real number.
    • The existence of √x for a given positive real number x (visual proof to be emphasized).
    • Examples of non-recurring / non-terminating decimals. The existence of the non-rational numbers (irrational numbers) such as √2, √3 & their representation on a number line. Explaining that the every real number is represented by the unique point on a number line & conversely, every point on a number line represents a unique real number.
    • Review of representation of natural numbers, integers, rational numbers on the number line. Representation of terminating or non-terminating recurring decimals, on the number line through successive magnification. Rational numbers as recurring or terminating decimals.

CBSE Syllabus for Class 9 Maths 2017 – 2.Algebra

  • POLYNOMIALS 
    • Definition of a polynomial in 1 variable, with examples & counter examples. The Coefficients of a polynomial, terms of a polynomial & zero polynomial. The degree of a polynomial. Constant, linear, quadratic & cubic polynomials. Monomials, binomials, trinomials. Factors & multiples. Zeros of a polynomial. Motivate & State the Remainder Theorem with examples. Statement & proof of a Factor Theorem. Factorization of ax2 + bx + c, a ≠ 0 where a, b & c are real numbers, and of cubic polynomials using the Factor Theorem.
    • Recall of the algebraic expressions & identities. Further verification of identities of type (x + y + z)2 = x2+ y2 + z2 + 2xy + 2yz + 2zx, (x ± y)3 = x3 ± y3 ± 3xy (x ± y), x³ ± y³ = (x ± y) (x² ± xy + y²), x3 + y3 + z3 – 3xyz = (x + y + z) (x2 + y2 + z2 – xy – yz – zx) & their use in factorization of polynomials. Simple expressions reducible to these polynomials.

Class 9 Maths Syllabus CBSE – 3.Geometry

  • TRIANGLES
    • Two triangles are congruent if any 2 sides &  included angle of one triangle is equal to any 2 sides and the included angle of the other triangle.
    • The two triangles are congruent if any two angles &the included side of 1 triangle is equal to any 2 angles and the included side of the other triangle.
    • Triangles are congruent if the three sides of one triangle are equal to three sides of the other triangle.
    • 2 Right triangles are congruent if the hypotenuse & a side of one triangle are equal to the hypotenuse & a side of the other triangle.
    • The angles opposite to the equal sides of a triangle will be equal.
    • Sides opposite to equal angles of a triangle are equal.
    • Triangle inequalities & relation between ‘angle and facing side’ inequalities in triangles.
  • LINES AND ANGLES
    • If a side of a triangle is produced,  exterior angle so formed is equal to the sum of the 2 interior opposite angles.
    • The sum of the three angles of a triangle is 180°.
    • Lines  are parallel to a given line are parallel.
    • Results on corresponding angles, interior angles,alternate angles  when a transversal intersects two parallel lines.
    • If 2 two lines intersect, vertically opposite angles are equal.
    • If a ray stand on a straight line, then the sum of the 2 adjacent angles so formed is 180° and the converse.
  • EUCLID’S GEOMETRY
    • History – Geometry in India & Euclid’s geometry. Euclid’s method of formalizing observed phenomenon into the rigorous mathematics with definitions, common/obvious notions, axioms/postulates, and theorems. The five postulates of Euclid. Equivalent versions of the fifth postulate.

  • COORDINATE GEOMETRYThe Cartesian plane, coordinates of a point, names and terms associated with the coordinate plane, notations, plotting points in the plane.

CBSE 9 Class Maths Syllabus – Mensuration

  • AREASArea of a triangle using Heron’s formula (without proof) and its application in finding the area of a quadrilateral.

  • LINEAR EQUATIONS IN 2 VARIABLES
    • Recall of linear equations in 1 variable. Introduction to the equation in two variables. Focus on a linear equations of the type ax+by+c=0. Proportion and with algebraic and graphical solutions being done simultaneously. Prove that a linear equation in 2 variables has infinitely many solutions & justify their being written as  the ordered pairs of real numbers, plotting them & showing that they seem to lie on a line. Examples, including problems on Ratio and problems from real life.

CBSE Class 9 Mathematics Syllabus – Geometry (contd.)

  • QUADRILATERALS
    • The diagonal divides a parallelogram into 2 Congruent Triangles.
    •  In a parallelogram opposite sides are equal, & conversely.
    • In a parallelogram the opposite angles will be equal, & conversely.
    • Parallelogram, the diagonals bisect each other and conversely.
    • A Quadrilateral is a parallelogram if a pair of its opposite sides is parallel & equal.
    • In a triangle, the line segment joining the mid points of any 2 sides is parallel to the 3rd side and (motivate) its converse.
  • AREA
    • Review concept of area, recall area of a rectangle.
      1. Parallelograms on the same base & between the same parallels have the same area.
      2. Triangles on the same (or equal base) base and between the same parallels are equal in area.
CBSE Syllabus Class 9th Mathematics
  • The Circles
    • Through examples, arrive at the definitions of circle related concepts, radius, diameter circumference, chord, arc, secant, sector, segment subtended angle.
      1. The eEqual chords of a circle subtends equal angles at the center & (motivate) its converse.
      2. (The perpendicular from the center of a circle to a chord bisects the chord & conversely, the line drawn through center of a circle to bisect a chord is perpendicular to the chord.
      3. There is 1 and only one circle passing through three given non-collinear points.
      4. Equal chords of a circle (or of congruent circles) are equidistant from the center (or their respective centers) and conversely.
      5. Angle subtended by an arc at center is double angle subtended by it at any point on remaining part of the circle.
      6. Angles in same segment of a circle are equal.
      7. If a line segment joining 2 points subtends an equal angle at 2 other points lying on same side of the line containing the segment, the 4 points lie on a circle.
      8. The sum of either of pair of opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral is 180° & its converse.
  • Constructions
    1. Construction of bisectors of line segments & angles of measure 60°, 90°, 45° etc., equilateral triangles.
    2. The Construction of a triangle given its base, sum or difference of the other 2 sides & 1 base angle.
    3. Construction of a triangle of given perimeter & base angles.

  • SURFACE AREAS AND VOLUMESSurface areas and volumes of cubes, cuboids, spheres (including hemispheres) and right circular cylinders/cones.

Syllabus of Maths for Class 9 CBSE – Statistics

  • Introduction to the Statistics: Collection of data, presentation of data – tabular form, ungrouped or grouped, bar graphs, frequency polygons, histograms (with varying base lengths), qualitative analysis of data to choose correct form of presentation for the collected data. Median, Mean, Mode of ungrouped data.

  • PROBABILITY
